I'm very much a newbie with all of this. I am shopping around for my first boat and thought it would be beneficial to join a local group so that I have a place to connect with people who know what they're talking about when it comes to boats.

The Learning Curve

Alright, I can honestly say that I'm beginning to understand more and more about boats. But WOW, do I have a long way to go. The terminology alone is daunting.

Here is a list of things that I have learned so far:

1. I will need to take a boating course of some kind (definitely)
2. A bowrider under 22 feet is the boat that best meets my needs
3. An outboard motor is best to have for the river
4. I need at least 150 HP
5. I need to use a pully thingy if I want to pull a tube
6. I will need to fi… Continue

Boating for Dummies

I'm not new to blogging, but I am new to boating. I love that I found this website. People here are so friendly and helpful. It's refreshing. I've wanted my own boat for as long as I can remember. I grew up in land locked Indiana and although they have plenty of lakes ( I wasn't close to Lake Michigan) my parents only owned one boat for approximately 2 seconds. I was in college at the time and only got to enjoy it once. When my parents moved to Florida I was very excited to move down here as wel… Continue

TAMMY ... FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS. I USED TO OWN A FULL SERVICE MARINA AND HAVE PERFORMED REPAIRS ON MANY DIFFERENT BOATS AND ENGINES. I AM NOT A SALESMAN, AND HAVE SEMI-RETIRED. I AM LOOKING TO MOVE DOWN TO THE MERRITT ISLAND AREA THIS SUMMER. AND SHOULD HAVE FREE TIME ON MY HANDS IF YOU WANT SOMEONE TO BOAT SHOP WITH. :) KEVIN

Hey Tammy,I see you are having a fun time boat shopping! It will drive someone crazy trying to find the right deal! I have for you a turn key 220 Weekender SeaRay Cuddy, 5.7 Mercruiser, Boat comes with everything you could possibly need for a great time on the water. Boat has been repowered a year ago along with complete service of outdrive wear items! I see you were looking for a boat in a lower price range but thought I would throw it out there for ya in case you were looking to upgrade after seeing the junk out there in that price range! Boat comes with anchors, ropes, bumpers, safty equip, first aid, and a 12 x 12 inflatable party island that is a hit everywhere it goes!! Give me a shout if interested! We are looking for a bigger boat! Ben

A few things to keep in mind.

1. The purchase price is just the beginning of an expensive hobby.
2. Pay little enough so that you will not feel bad if you are not on the boat every weekend.
3. Buy one big enough for your friends but too small for your relatives.
4. When looking for a boat, determine exactly where the beer cooler fits before worrying about anything else.
5. It never hurts to have 2 vhf radios, a sea tow ot tow boat US membership, a cell phone and extra ice, food an d beer aboard, refer to #4 above.

Tammy, find a friend with a boat. Trust me it's the most inexpensive way to be on the water.

The Maxum boats that I have seen are in the higher quality range. Definitely not cheaply built and they use good quality materials in the construction. Being a 12 year old boat I would look closely at the outdrive bellows, if it is weather checked and or starting to show cracks, it is ready to start leaking. This will sink your new boat very quickly. This is also a fairly expensive repair, so have someone knowledgeable look at it. Also, find out when the water pumps were last replaced and how much use the boat has since the pumps were replaced. If the lower unit pump was replaced 2 - 3 years ago and only run for say 50 hours, it is probably rotted out by now. The impeller is made of rubber and it will rot and deform from just sitting. This is one item that lasts longer the more it is used. Also, if the engine has over 300 hours look at the exhaust manifolds especially if it was used in salt water.

I'd say the boat is too espensive. and the pully things are fairly cheap.
At 4:26pm on August 26, 2009, Mike said…
not really, I do it all the time. but I have a pully that hooks up to the stern (back) eyes on the transom. Then the tube or whatever your pulling gets tied to the pully/float. It's a must have for many reasons. Helps keep the boat on course and better control if your pulling a skiier/boarder that's cutting the wakes up.

If you don't have a lot of money allocated for a boat, there are a lot of bargin priced bow riders out there now. Check out Bayliner and StingRay to name a few.... If you can try to get an outboard vs an I/O (inboard outboard). Around here outboards rule, shallower water, trailer-bility, etc... If I see anything I'll let you know... my other email is mikejbrown02@gmail.com

Tammy, I was looking at Triumph boats too at one time. But all the knowledgeable old salts advised me against them. It's the Tupperware boat, the boat flexes but the deck is solid. And it will discolor if run in the River. So I went with a Key Largo, the Key West are good inexpensive boats. But it all depends on what you want to do with it. Right now there are so many GREAT deals out there. So get your Stimulus Package now! Don't forget to hit www.boattrader.com

Alot of pro's- but I have owned a couple. The 4 stroke seadoo's are the best, just a little pricey. They handle great.

Tammy I would not recommed a jet boat for your first boat. Although jet boats are a lot of fun they have higher maintenance cost the engines rpms run higher you use more fuel. The engines wear out faster they are harder to work on. Jet pumps require…

We own a 15' jet boat sportster which seats 4 people - we sold our 23' IO and bought this boat so we could go into shallower water. It is a fun little boat - goes around 50 mph, is not bad on gas, and doesn't take too long to clean up! We have also…

We haven't heard anything. Please keep an eye out, but the chances of getting the boat back don't look good. I hear that there have been a lot of problems at Lee Wenner with theft, so everyone be careful if you put in or dock there.
