Newbie question - outboard motor
Hi All,
I just purchased a 1996 200 hp johnson viper on a 1990 23' bayliner.
This is our first boat.
My question is this:
Once I hook the rabbit ears up to the hose, with the water on should the water be shooting out of engine right then or does the engine need to be started first?
If the engine needs to be started first how long should you keep the engine on before water begins to come out of the little hole up top (also what is this called?)

No, you should hook up the ears and turn on the water. Then start the engine. The only way water will come out of the pee tube without the engine running is on the models with the flush kit that flushes behind the thermostate but does not circulate thru the water jackets as it is not running. After salt water use I usually run it 5 min on the ears, some may say longer. Hope this helps.

I'll add my 2 cents. I always run the carburetors dry after I flush the engine simply by disconnecting the fuel line ( providing you have the quick disconnect type) from the engine and letting the motor run itself till it quits. This gets enough fuel out of the system so you don' have too many fouling problems if you can't use the boat for a couple months. I know it's a new toy and you will use it every week-end but things do happen to the best of us and an ounce of prevention. The other option is to start the motor with the ears and water on for a few minutes every couple weeks but I always forget.

We haven't heard anything. Please keep an eye out, but the chances of getting the boat back don't look good. I hear that there have been a lot of problems at Lee Wenner with theft, so everyone be careful if you put in or dock there.
