My parents got a new boat and the engine label says to use SAE 30 motor oil mixed in the gas. Does this mean they can use plain 30 wt oil like you would put in a car, or do they have to use outboard motor oil?
I seriously doubt that, your dad should check with the dealer. If it is a four stroke outboard, it will use a lube oil, likely SAE30, but not in the gas. A two stroke outboard should use a specific two stroke oil mixed in the gas at the recomended ratio. Get it straight before you blow up your Daddys new toy!
Is this a "new" boat or just new to you? there was a time that SAE30 was used in the gas and I can remember seeing the lables as you describe. But these are very old motors. Not even the new 4 strokes use plain SAE30 especially in the gas as a mix.

It's used- new to them. I should have clarified that when I made the post. My dad got a deal in exchange for some work he did for a guy. He said he wants to replace the motor but for now he wanted to get it running and check it out.
OK, Lisa, time for some facts...
What brand of motor, what year, what horsepower?
If you were serious, you would have googled all this long ago.
There are many forums that cater to outboard problems moderated by experts in the field.
BTW, if you get it running really good, I would love to take a ride!

We did. When my dad was first talking about it, I told him I was a member of this forum where there were some friendly people and I would put the word out for opinions. He has since solved his problem. No need to be snippy with me about it.

You can't use SAE30, the ash content is too high, it will carbon foul the plugs, maybe the rings. You're safe to use TCW-3 2 stroke oil as a mix. Avoid the Walmart cheap brand, and use something better from OMC or Mercury. You cannot blow up the engine either way, but TCW-3 is what I'd use and you'll be safe as it's refined for outboard use. Start with 50:1 ratio.
I have some fresh water boating friends in Orlando.I will pass your original post to them. In case they left the local area. Which is probably the case. Others should do the same, maybe we can cover the state at least.
good luck,
Rob
We haven't heard anything. Please keep an eye out, but the chances of getting the boat back don't look good. I hear that there have been a lot of problems at Lee Wenner with theft, so everyone be careful if you put in or dock there.
Plastic tank. Fiberglass would deteriorate and I believe that aluminum oxidizes. Not iron oxide rust but oxidation nonetheless. Boats made after 1994 are supposed to have ethanol compatible gas tanks. Do you agree? Do you replace the water separatio…

Henry,
Saw your boat heading in at the port Wednesday. We had been out to 8A and points north of there, not a lot of luck, Cuda and sharks. Was looking to see how you did Wednesday for comparison, I hope your report doesnt depress me too much.
